Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
